Content Overview

The materials transcribed and archived in this collection primarily consist of traditional and modern Pinuyumayan songs, song instruction, oral history interviews, daily vernacular conversations, ritual ceremonies, and stage performing recordings. However, a small portion of the tapes also includes other content, such as recordings of online English classrooms and non-indigenous language lessons. Much of this content has been recorded into a single tape. Furthermore, the collection includes Amis songs, demonstrating the significant influence of Amis songs on the Pinuyumayan community.

Currently, there are ten Pinuyumayan communities in Taitung: Nanwang, Papulu, Danadanaw, Mulivulivuk, Aripay, Pinaski, Tamalrakaw, Likavung, Kasavakan, and Katratripulr. The Pinuyumayan are divided into two systems in terms of mythology and linguistic customs: the Bamboo-based system and the Stone-based system. The Nanwang and Papulu villages belong to the Bamboo-based system, while the remaining ones belong to the Stone-based system.

After listening to the transcribed materials, it was determined that the audio and video recordings in this collection did not originate solely in Pinaski and Tamalrakaw, but also involved other tribes such as Nanwang, Kasavakan, and Likavung. Singers and speakers, if recorded on the tapes, are noted on the page. If not, they will be confirmed through future field investigations.

The songs recorded in the audio and video recordings, with their ancient melodies, were likely used in ritual ceremonies of the time, such as the Hunting Ceremony, the Millet Harvest Festival, and the Sea Festival. The remaining songs are daily songs, such as the “saraipan” women’s work-team song. This batch of materials also includes records of the transmission and teaching of these songs.

The production years of the audio and video tapes range from as early as 1978 (oral history of Pinaski Village) to as late as 2011 (oral history of Dr. Sun’s relatives), mainly concentrated between 1978 and 1998.

This collection confirms that during the Pinuyumayan people’s annual rituals from the 1970s to the 1990s, apart from a small portion of the traditional chanting of patrilratrilraw, the rest of the songs and dances did not involve live singing. Instead, recorded music was played, and people danced to the music. The music played was not all Pinuyumayan music; according to elders, Amis music was also included. The recordings in this collection include modern Amis songs, and documentary footage of the rituals provides audio of the songs and dances, indirectly supporting this account.

The recording also includes many of the bird songs “’emaayaayam” and work team songs “saraipan” popular in communities such as Pinaski and Puyuma, and different versions of these songs. This shows that these two types of songs were quite popular between the 1970s and 1990s, and singers could freely change the lyrics.

The vernacular talk is in fluent Pinaski dialect, which can serve as valuable material for linguistic analysis and cultural history.

The audio and video tapes transcribed and compiled in this project, although not complete materials, can reflect some of the sounds of the Pinuyumayan people’s lives in those days.
